MDM as a discipline vs a technology

The discipline of master data management as a whole is an element of data governance which in turn is an element of business information management.

Although MDM has historically been the exclusive domain of specialized data groups and IT this is no longer as prevalent as business leaders come to realize that they need to separate the focus of the practice from the technology. MDM is not a technology. MDM is a business practice and vendors have labeled their solutions or positioned themselves as MDM software solution providers.

The Pretectum CMDM platform view is that master data management and Customer MDM in particular, as an area of master data management, cannot be realistically managed and controlled by technologists and IT with exclusivity. The problems with data are business problems and while IT may nurture the infrastructure, decisions, and action is often left to the customer-facing side of the business.

Pretectum takes the view that customer master data management is something that should be controlled and managed by business data managers and stakeholders who have a vested interest in having the most complete and best quality customer data at their disposal.
